Ring and Radial Socket Circuits

Both designs are valid; the choice affects cable, protection and how faults present.

The ring final circuit is a British convention that uses smaller cable efficiently by feeding sockets from both directions. Radial circuits feed outward from the board and stop. Knowing which you have explains a lot about how a fault behaves.

How they differ in practice

A break in a ring often leaves sockets working — the circuit becomes two radials — which is why undetected broken rings are common findings on an EICR. A break in a radial leaves everything beyond it dead, which is more obvious but no more dangerous.

Where radials make sense

Dedicated supplies for high-load appliances, garden offices and garages, and new-build layouts where cable routes are planned rather than inherited. Kitchens are increasingly designed with multiple radials rather than one heavily loaded ring.

Testing tells you which you have

Ring continuity testing confirms whether a circuit is genuinely a ring. We do this as part of an EICR and before adding sockets, because extending a broken ring is how a small defect becomes a bigger one.
