How they differ in practice
A break in a ring often leaves sockets working — the circuit becomes two radials — which is why undetected broken rings are common findings on an EICR. A break in a radial leaves everything beyond it dead, which is more obvious but no more dangerous.

Dedicated supplies for high-load appliances, garden offices and garages, and new-build layouts where cable routes are planned rather than inherited. Kitchens are increasingly designed with multiple radials rather than one heavily loaded ring.
