Heated plastic gives off a sharp, slightly fishy odour long before anything visibly scorches. It means a connection is running hot, and hot connections do not improve on their own. The safe response is short: isolate, stop using it, and get it looked at.
What to do immediately
Unplug whatever is connected if you can do so without touching a hot plug, then switch off the circuit at the consumer unit. Do not keep using the outlet because it still works — the fact that it works is exactly why it is heating.
- Switch the circuit off at the board
- Leave the appliance unplugged and out of use
- Do not remove the faceplate yourself
- Photograph any discolouration for the electrician
Why sockets overheat
Common causes are a screw terminal that has worked loose, a plug with a poor fuse contact, aluminium-era wiring, or a high-load appliance running continuously through an outlet that has aged. Extension leads and multi-way adaptors under desks and TV units are heavily represented in the ones we replace.
What repair involves
We isolate, inspect the accessory and the conductors behind it, cut back damaged cable where there is enough slack, and replace the accessory. Then we test the circuit end to end rather than assuming the one outlet was the only casualty, because heat damage often travels along the ring.
Common questions
- Can I just replace the socket myself?
- Replacing like-for-like is permitted in many cases, but if there is heat damage the conductors need inspecting and testing, which needs proper equipment.
- How urgent is it really?
- Treat it as same-day. Isolate the circuit and arrange a visit rather than waiting to see if the smell returns.
- Will the whole circuit need replacing?
- Rarely. Most repairs are local to the accessory, but testing tells us whether the damage went further.
- Should the rest of the house be checked?
- If the property has never had an EICR, this is a good moment to have the installation assessed as a whole.
Isolate the circuit first, then call us — we will tell you honestly whether it needs today or this week.
