Cooking, laundry, heating control, lighting and technology all land in the same space, usually with a glazed wall that changes how the room is lit. The electrical scope is bigger than any other room in an extension, and the decisions have to be made earlier because they are tied to the kitchen drawings rather than the building drawings.
Supplies to plan for
Take the kitchen designer's appliance schedule to your electrician. Every appliance has a supply implication.
- Dedicated supplies for hob, oven and any induction load
- Switched spurs for integrated appliances, sited so they can be reached later
- Worktop sockets planned against the finished layout rather than the shell
- Power and data for the island, routed while the floor is open
- Extract, underfloor heating control and boiler or heat pump interlocks
The island decides the floor
Island supplies have to be run before the slab or floor build up is finished. If the island moves 300mm during the kitchen design, the electrics move with it, so freeze the position before first fix or accept a later chase.
Lighting in a glazed room
Bifolds and roof lights change the scheme. Daylight handles the day, so the evening scheme carries the room, which means layered lighting, dimming zones and something lit outside the glass.
Sequencing with the trades
First fix goes in after the shell and before plastering. Second fix follows the kitchen fit so accessories land on finished surfaces. Testing and certification close the job out, and the notifiable elements are certified at that point.

- How early do you need the kitchen plan?
- Before first fix. Socket, spur and island positions all come from it.
- Can appliance positions change later?
- Small changes are usually manageable at second fix. Moving the hob or the island is not.
- Does a kitchen extension need a bigger board?
- Often it needs more ways at least. We test the existing board and tell you before ordering anything.
- Who coordinates with the builder?
- We do, directly. It is quicker than passing dates through the homeowner.
