Outdoor lighting turns a garden from a black window at night into usable space. It also, done badly, floods a neighbour's bedroom and produces glare that makes the garden harder to see rather than easier. The electrical requirements outdoors are stricter than indoors for good reason, and the design principles are almost the opposite of indoor lighting.
Mains or low voltage
Mains outdoor circuits are the right choice for permanent fixtures: wall lights, soffit lighting, security floods and anything on the house itself. They are run in suitable cable, correctly protected, and terminated in fittings with an appropriate ingress protection rating.
Low voltage garden systems, running from a transformer near the house, suit planted areas, path lights and anything you might want to move as the garden matures. Cables are safer to work around and the system is more forgiving of later changes. Many gardens end up with both.
Cable routes and burial
Buried cable must be of a type suitable for the conditions, laid at a sensible depth, protected from damage and marked so that future digging finds warning tape before it finds the cable. Running cable through a conduit or duct makes later replacement possible without excavating the whole run.
Plan routes around where you will realistically dig later: away from planting beds and vegetable patches, along boundaries and hard edges where possible.

Protection and enclosures
Outdoor circuits require residual current protection and correctly rated enclosures. Fittings need an ingress protection rating suited to their position: a soffit light is far less exposed than an in ground uplighter that sits in a puddle every winter.
Cheap outdoor fittings fail predictably at the gland and the lens seal. Water gets in, the fitting corrodes and, on a shared circuit, it takes out the protective device and everything else on it. Spend more on the fittings that sit lowest and wettest.
Designing the scheme
Light surfaces and objects, not open space. Graze a wall, uplight a tree, wash a step, mark a path edge. The eye reads those pools of light and the garden feels larger. A single bright flood pointed at the lawn achieves the opposite: everything beyond the beam becomes invisible.
Keep fittings low and shielded, aim them away from eye level, and use warm colour temperatures around 2700K. Cool white outdoors looks harsh and unflattering to planting.
Neighbours, wildlife and light spill
Light that crosses a boundary is a genuine source of neighbour disputes and can be considered a nuisance. Shield fittings, aim downwards and check the effect from the neighbour's side of the fence, not just your own patio.
Continuous bright lighting also disrupts wildlife. Timers, sensors and lower output fittings reduce that considerably while still giving you a garden you can use.
Controls and zoning
Separate circuits or channels for path lighting, feature lighting and security lighting give useful flexibility. Path lighting on a timer, feature lighting on a switch inside the house, security lighting on a sensor is a sensible default arrangement.
Photocells switch at dusk automatically, which is convenient but can leave lights running all night. Combining a photocell with a timer that cuts off at a reasonable hour is usually better.
Maintenance
Outdoor lighting needs occasional attention: clearing planting away from fittings, cleaning lenses, checking glands and re aiming anything knocked out of position. Building in accessible joint boxes and ducted cable routes at installation makes that a ten minute job rather than an excavation.
Phasing the work with landscaping
If landscaping is planned, get the cable routes and ducts in before paving, turf and planting go down. Ducts with draw cords cost very little at that stage and let fittings be added or moved later without lifting anything. Where the garden is already finished, low voltage systems laid under mulch and bark are far less destructive than mains burial and can usually be installed in a single visit.

- How deep should cables be buried?
- Deep enough to be clear of normal cultivation, in suitable cable or duct, with warning tape above.

- Not if fittings are shielded, aimed down and checked from the neighbouring side of the boundary.
- Can it be added to an existing circuit?
- Sometimes, but a dedicated protected circuit is usually better so a garden fault does not affect the house.
- Do I need planning permission for garden lighting?
- Not normally for domestic garden lighting, though listed buildings and conservation areas can have restrictions worth checking with the local authority before fixing anything to the building.
