Two households can buy the same charge point and pay very different amounts to have it fitted. That is not sharp practice, it is geography and building fabric. The cable route, the state of the consumer unit, the earthing arrangement and the main fuse capacity account for almost all of the variation. This guide explains each cost driver so you can compare quotes on the same basis rather than on headline price alone.
The three components of any quote
Every EV charger quote breaks into hardware, circuit installation and any enabling work. Hardware is the unit itself and is broadly comparable between installers for the same model. Circuit installation covers cable, containment, protective device, labour and testing. Enabling work is everything the survey uncovers: a board change, an earth electrode, a submain upgrade or a supply upgrade application.
A quote that gives one number with no breakdown is difficult to compare and difficult to challenge if it moves. Ask for the three parts separately.
Cable route length and difficulty
Cable is priced by the metre, but labour is priced by difficulty. Ten metres of surface trunking in a garage is fast. Ten metres through a finished ceiling, around a stairwell and out through a rendered wall is not. Routes that cross a driveway, need ducting under a path or require lifting a floor add hours before any cable is pulled.
If you have flexibility on where the unit goes, walk the route with the installer. Moving the unit two metres to reach a straightforward wall penetration can remove a meaningful chunk of labour.
Consumer unit condition
If the existing board has a free way, the correct type of protection available and is in sound condition, the new circuit lands in it and costs nothing extra. If the board is full, a small dedicated enclosure is fitted alongside, which is a modest addition. If the board is obsolete, damaged or lacks any modern protection, a full board change may be the sensible route.
A board change is not automatically required by a charger installation. Be wary of a quote that assumes one without inspecting the existing unit.
Earthing and protective measures
Where the charge point provides its own open earth protection, no electrode is needed and there is no additional cost. Where an electrode is required, that means driving a rod, testing it and connecting it, which adds labour and occasionally excavation.
This is worth asking about explicitly, because two quotes may differ by exactly this item and the cheaper one may simply have chosen a unit with the protection built in.
Supply upgrades and load management
If the property genuinely cannot support the additional demand, load management is the low cost answer and is included in most modern units. A supply upgrade involves the network operator, has its own charges and timescales, and is only pursued when demand genuinely exceeds capacity even with management in place.
For the majority of domestic properties, load management resolves the issue and no supply work is needed.
What should always be included
Whatever the headline figure, certain items are not optional and should appear in any quote you accept.
- Full circuit testing and an electrical installation certificate
- Building control notification through the installer's scheme
- Commissioning of the unit and handover of the app or access setup
- Manufacturer warranty registration
- Making good around cable penetrations
How to compare quotes fairly
Put the quotes side by side and check they describe the same unit, the same route, the same protective arrangement and the same enabling work. If one is materially cheaper, find the line item that explains it before assuming it is better value. Very often the difference is a surface run versus a concealed run, or an assumed board change that another installer did not think necessary.
Finally, ask what happens if the survey finding changes on the day. A good installer will tell you the variation in advance rather than presenting it as a surprise once the wall is already drilled.
Budgeting for the whole project
Think in terms of the total project rather than the unit price. That means the charge point, the circuit, any enabling work, and any decorating needed where cable enters the building. Most households find the enabling work is nil or minor, but the survey is what confirms that. Booking a survey before committing to a particular unit also avoids buying hardware that turns out to be unsuitable for your earthing arrangement or parking position.
