Downlights are the default ceiling solution in British homes, and they are frequently laid out as a symmetrical grid without reference to what is underneath them. The result is glare in the wrong places, shadows on worktops and a ceiling that looks like an airport lounge. A better approach starts with the tasks in the room and works outwards.
Start with tasks, not symmetry
Identify what each part of the room is for. A kitchen has worktops, a hob, a sink and a walkway. A living room has a seating area, perhaps a reading chair and a television wall. Light the tasks first, then add general lighting to fill in, then decide whether the layout can be made visually tidy without moving anything important.
A grid that looks perfect on a ceiling plan but puts every downlight behind the person standing at the worktop has failed at the only job that mattered.
Practical spacing rules
As a working guide in a standard 2.4 metre ceiling, downlights at roughly 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart give even general light without hotspots. Closer than a metre and you get overlap and glare, further than about 1.8 metres and you get scalloping and dark patches between them.
Keep fittings at least 600 to 700 millimetres from walls in most rooms, so light falls on the wall rather than washing straight down it. In kitchens, place the run of downlights over the front edge of the worktop, not over the centre of the units, so you are not standing in your own shadow.

Beam angle and colour temperature
Narrow beams create pools and drama; wide beams create even wash. For general ceiling lighting a 60 degree beam is a safe default. Use narrower beams deliberately, for artwork or a feature, not by accident across a whole room.
For colour temperature, around 2700K to 3000K suits living rooms and bedrooms, while kitchens and bathrooms often take 3000K to 4000K well. What matters most is consistency. Mixed colour temperatures in one ceiling look like a mistake even when each individual choice was reasonable.
Dimming and zoning
A single switch controlling twelve downlights gives you exactly one lighting mood. Splitting the ceiling into two or three switched and dimmed groups transforms a room for a small amount of extra cable. In open plan spaces this is essential rather than luxurious.
Choose dimmable fittings and a compatible trailing edge dimmer, and confirm the total load sits within the dimmer's rated range.
Fire rating, insulation and joists
Downlights cut holes in the ceiling, which is a fire barrier between floors. Fire rated fittings restore that barrier and are the norm in domestic installations. Where loft insulation sits above, use fittings rated for insulation coverage or maintain the required clearance.
Joist positions will constrain the layout. It is far better to know that at the design stage than to discover it once the holes are marked out. An electrician can locate joists before any cutting starts.
Fewer, better fittings
Modern LED downlights are considerably brighter than the halogens people remember, so the old habit of filling a ceiling with fittings usually produces a room that is uncomfortably bright at full output and unpleasant to sit in. Six well placed fittings on a dimmer generally beat twelve poorly placed ones.
Consider mixing sources too. Downlights for general and task light, plus a pendant over a table and a lamp or two, gives a far more comfortable room than ceiling light alone.

Marking out before cutting
Before any hole is cut, mark the proposed positions on the ceiling with tape and stand in the room at different times of day. Check them against worktop edges, the dining table centre, seating positions and the swing of doors. Joist positions are then confirmed with a detector and the layout adjusted. Ten minutes of marking out prevents the far more expensive exercise of filling and redecorating a ceiling that was cut in the wrong places.
