A faint hum from a dimmer at part brightness is common and usually benign. A buzz that is loud enough to hear across a quiet room, gets worse over time, or comes with warmth at the plate, is worth investigating properly.
Dimmer and lamp interaction
Trailing-edge and leading-edge dimmers behave differently with LED drivers. Mismatch produces buzz in either the dimmer or the lamp itself. Swapping to a dimmer specified for LED loads, and checking the total wattage sits inside the module's stated range, resolves most cases.
Loose or overloaded terminations
Buzz accompanied by heat is different. That points to a poor termination or an accessory carrying more than it should. This is the version that scorches faceplates, and it is the reason we ask whether the plate feels warm.
Transformers and drivers
Older low-voltage downlight transformers hum as they age. Where a ceiling has ten of them, replacing the lot with modern integrated LED fittings is usually cheaper than chasing individual failures, and it removes the heat load from the ceiling void at the same time.
